Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana

To promote innovation of a higher order that directly impacts the needs of the Industry/industries and there by improves the competitive edge of Indian manufacturing, and design Industry.

Applicability

The scheme would be applicable to the projects proposed by the Indian Institutes of Technologies initially. The projects should have collaboration between the academia and industry - within or outside India.

Objectives:

  • To promote innovation in areas that are directly of relevance to the manufacturing and design industry.
  • To spur innovative mindset in the students and faculty in premier technological institutes.
  • To bring a coordinated action between academia and the industry
  • To strengthen the laboratories and research facilities in the premier technological institutions.
  • To have outcome-based research funding.

Essential Features:

The projects under this programme shall have the following essential features:

The project shall have been initiated by Industry/Industries or jointly by the Industry and the Institute.

It should address a specific need of the industry/industries and there should be clear expected outcomes from the project.

Normally it would be expected that the project would result in registering of a patent.

At least 25% of the project cost should be committed by the Industry/industries prior to the project being considered.

The project should have been considered and approved by the internal approval mechanism of the institution.

The projects should be uploaded on the IIT Council website for which IIT Kanpur will make special arrangements.

Dr.Bhaskar Ramamurthi

Bhaskar Ramamurthi obtained his B.Tech in Electronics Engineering from IIT Madras in 1980 and his M.S. and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1982 and 1985 respectively. He was awarded the University of California Regents Fellowship during his doctoral studies. After obtaining his doctorate, he worked at AT&T Bell Labs for two years before joining the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras in 1986, where he is now the director. He served as the Dean of Planning at IIT Madras before taking over the role of director in September 2011.

His research interests are on topics in modulation and coding for mobile communications, wireless communication networks and design and implementation of wireless local loop systems. He is one of the founding members of the Telecommunications and Computer Networking Group (TeNeT) group at IIT Madras. He is the principal architect of corDECT wireless local loop system and Broadband corDECT Wireless DSL System, widely deployed in India and 15 countries. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering since 2000. He was elected as a Fellow of IEEE, effective from January 2015.

1. Can multiple industries support a UAY proposal? If so, how shall we enter the names of their PIs given that there is only one field?

Please form a consortium with a name assigned to it and one person as lead-PI of the consortium. Put this consortium name and lead PI name in the proposal. Attach a document with the list of companies in the consortium, the proportion of share of funds in percentage and names of PIs from each, as part of the support letter. As far as MHRD is concerned there will be a single person and entity responsible.
